Spring at Great Dixter
This week I went to see a garden that is weeks ahead of mine!! Being at Great Dixter reminded me what a huge difference there is between Sussex and the North; here we have trees just starting into leaf, there I saw a bluebell wood full out under hazel coppice. The journey back on the train was like seeing the progression of the seasons in reverse.
What a joy it was to visit Dixter. I felt so at ease there, so relaxed, lulled by the washes of colour, the unpretentious and happy mixture of bulbs, perennials, annuals, shrubs, trees, topiary, wood and stone. The tulips were at their best, here subtle combinations of purple with silver foliage of cardoons, there jazzy orange with blue. There is such a sense of playfulness and exuberance in the way it is planted, Christopher Lloyd's spirit infusing the place, yet not static like a historic garden that remains stuck in a planting plan and never changes.
I loved the use of aged, silvered wood, tall poles to support honeysuckles, or to grow clematis behind espaliered fruit trees as in this photo. The wooden staves have sagged and settled like a ship, split lenthways providing gaps that ladybirds can overwinter in, giving a rhythmn and patina to the dry wood.
I came home inspired and dissatisfied with my own garden at the same time!

Nice picture!
Very beautiful picture. Keep sharing....
hi
Great Dixter is such an amazing place for inspiration, especially the way Christopher Lloyd mixed different plants so naturally. If you want something to watch on your phone while planning out your new layout ideas, you can check out the xuper tv apk to get some live entertainment channels. That train ride back sounds like a cool way to see the seasons shift.
It is so rare to find a clean blog post about gardening these days without twenty different commercial pop-up ads blocking the text. I really like this simple page layout. It reminds me of the clean setup on the xuper tv app, which I use to watch live sports and movies on my phone for free.
I mostly use the Xuper TV official website to find a good movie after spending the whole day working outside and feeling dissatisfied with my own backyard. Unwinding with a fast stream is the perfect way to relax when you are too tired to do anything else. Those silvered wood structures in the photos look incredible.
Coming home feeling inspired but also completely annoyed with your own backyard is the classic side effect of visiting a professional layout! After an afternoon of staring at your own weeds, sometimes you just need to close the back door and put on a good film to clear your head. I usually just jump onto Xuper TV platform since you can launch a stream instantly without setting up a complicated account.
Moto Wheelie 3D is a fantastic mobile game to dive into when you need a fast-paced mental reset after spending the afternoon analyzing garden layouts or reflecting on seasonal planting cycles. It is wonderful how the late Christopher Lloyd's playful and exuberant spirit keeps Great Dixter feeling alive and evolving rather than frozen in a static historical plan. Seeing the progression of spring move in reverse during a train journey north must have been a highly poetic experience.
